Gentlemen Songsters Tour of Scotland
Maryetta and Vernon Midgley were again our guests, and the choir visited Scotland for a concert tour.
Our Celebrity Concert guests this year were The Fairey Engineering Brass Band.
We held two special events to celebrate our Silver Jubilee year. The first was a concert at which our guests were again Maryetta and Vernon. The second was a massed male choir event, at which we were joined by choristers from Bridgnorth, Cannock, Cradley Heath, Kidderminster and Wolverhampton. The soprano, Angela Beale also joined us at the latter event.
Janet Lawton retired as our Accompanist, and was appointed as our first Vice President. She was succeeded at the piano by Susie Bourne. It was in this year that Noel J M Lee was promoted from Conductor to Musical Director.
The Cambridge Buskers were our guests at the Celebrity Concert, and we also held a concert at which our guests were The Peninsula Womens' Chorus from Palo Alto, California, USA.
We sang with massed choirs at the National Association Of Choirs (Group 11) at Bedworth Civic Hall. Later in the year we appeared in the "Massed English Male Choirs Concert" at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
This year saw the "twinning" of Dudley with Fort William in Scotland, and the choir was invited to perform at the civic ceremony in Scotland. During the year a joint concert was held with the "Worcester Chorus" from Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. At our Christmas Charity Concert, we raised £1,710 towards the BBC's Children In Need appeal. The below picture was taken at one of the choir performances during 1986.
We were invited to participate in the 21st Anniversary celebrations of the Canoldir Male Choir at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre Arena. We also visited Mark in Somerset for a concert in the village church. Our connections with other male choirs were extended again at our Celebrity Concert when the Tredegar Male Voice Choir were our guests - we continue to enjoy a close association with them today.
The choir's first major international tour took place in 1988 when we visited New England, USA, giving concerts in Sturbridge, Worcester and Manchester, Massachusetts, together with a performance at Cape Cod. The visit to Sturbridge coincided with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the town by former residents of Stourbridge, England. We were also pleased to play host to the "Bremer Singkries" from Bremen, Germany.
Our association with Bert Bissell MBE was cemented when he was invited to become President. Moira Anderson was our guest at the Celebrity Concert.
Children In Need featured again in our fund raising this year when we appeared at a massed choir event in Luton. Our international travels continued when we paid a return visit to the Bremer Singkries' home city and were pleased to have the opportunity of singing in Bremen Cathedral. Our second Vice President, Rev Donald Anderson MA BD HFC was appointed.
