Saturday 18th August 7.00pm
A contingent from the choir will be joining with the Bert Bissell Memorial Society on their annual pilgrimage from Dudley to Fort William - this year's visit takes place between 16th and 19th August
The late Bert Bissell, MBE, recipient of the World Methodist Peace Award, climbed Ben Nevis 107 times in his illustrious life, and was instrumental in placing a peace cairn on the top of Ben Nevis on VJ Day 1945. He also organised peace cairns on may other prominent mountain summits worldwide. Bert was President of the Gentlemen Songsters until his death in 1998, and was a Freeman of the boroughs of Dudley and Lochaber (including Fort William)
This year's event is significant in a number of different ways
During the visit, the travelling party will pay its respects at Bert's grave in the churchyard in Glen Nevis on arrival in the area on Thursday: a proportion of the travellers will do a memorial scaling of the peak on Friday, and on Saturday evening at 7.00pm there will be a Memorial Concert featuring the Gentlemen Songsters touring party assisted by local musicians in Duncansburgh Church, Fort William.
Three former Mayors of Dudley will be amongst the party, and will represent the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley at its Scottish twin town, Fort William.
Charitable proceeds of the whole event will be donated to the YMCA in honour of Bert.
