Gentlemen Songsters Male Voice Choir - Choir Summary

The Gentlemen Songsters Male Voice Choir is based in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, England. We have a wide and varied musical repertoire incorporating many traditional Male Voice compositions, Grand Opera, Light Opera, Religious and Semi-Religious items, Spirituals, Songs From The Shows, Folk Songs, Modern Pop songs plus some downright comical and frivolous pieces.

The choir performs in over 30 concerts and events every year at venues including local church halls, community centres and in three major concerts at our "home base" - Dudley Concert Hall. Whilst entertaining our audiences, we raise funds for local, national and international charities. Our annual Christmas Charity Concerts alone have raised many thousands of pounds for local charities

In the recent past, the choir has undertaken concert tours in the German Mosel region; Normandy, France, Portugal's Algarve and has also visited Bremen in Germany to represent the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley at its twin northern German town. Most recently, the choir visited The Netherlands.

"The Gentlemen Songsters Male Voice Choir" was formed in May 1957 by a group of nine men from the Wall Heath area of Kingswinford, Dudley. Fifty years later, the choir is justifiably proud of its achievements, having sung in many unusual venues including the top of Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the British Isles), in Kent's Cavern, (Devon, England), on a train in the Channel Tunnel, on top of the English Channel on a P&O Ferry, and on The Birmingham Wheel. More traditional concert appearances have been made at The Royal Albert Hall, London; The National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham; the former home of Welsh rugby, Cardiff Arms Park, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and Birmingham International Convention Centre in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of the opening of the World Olympic Committee Meeting;

The choir is a member of both the English Association of Male Voice Choirs, and the National Association of Choirs, and has a strong and continuing relationship with many other English and Welsh Male Voice Choirs. Since 1984 associations with choirs from other countries have been formed, firstly by hosting the "Peninsular Women's Chorus" from Palo Alto, California, USA on their visit to England; the "Worcester Chorus" from Worcester, Massachusetts, USA; and the "Bremer Singkries" from Bremen, Germany. In turn, we have visited Massachusetts, USA, forging links with the many towns in Massachusetts which carry the names of towns and cities in the Midlands area of England - particularly Worcester, and Sturbridge, MA, both of which have historical associations with Worcester and Stourbridge in England.

In recent years, the choir has greatly benefited from the hard work and dedication of a very talented Music Team, recently lead by Deputy Conductor, John Walley and very ably assisted by Accompanist Neil Bolton. A strong team effort has improved our existing repertoire, and has significantly expanded the range of our styles of music, giving us the opportunity to adapt our performances to suit the occasion. The choir is pleased to announce the appointment, in March 2008, of Mike Wells as its new Musical Director

Rehearsals are held every Monday evening at 7.45pm at Stream Road Methodist Church, Kingswinford, and any gentleman (young or old) who would like to come to listen, and perhaps eventually to join us, will be made most welcome.
